PRELIMINARY EXERCISES

Continuity Editing

We experimented the idea of a continuity, we used a variety of shot types and angles. We also experimented with the lighting when using natural lighting to portray a clear image. We also have used many visual codes throughout the video to engage a exciting story line. Our sequence is based of a mystery crime assignment which is meant to be shown as top secret and professional, this has been presented by the use of visual codes. For example, Clothing, smart clothing gives the impression of authority and creates a serious tone.

We used many different shot types, such as Shot reserve shot, I think this shot has high importance as it displays the relationship between the two characters and presents the type of setting between the two. We used short and snappy shots between the characters to show a professional attitude towards the situation.

When editing we used 'Final Cut Pro', I find this editing platform a quick and simple way to create my piece. When adding text onto each scene we used 'Titles and Texts', this is used to clearly present each shot type. We also added background music on our first scene, this is because it is a long paced clip and to engage the audience we added a lighthearted yet intriguing background sound. To create a smooth transition between the scenes we used many cross dissolves which made the final piece flow together. We also used a unique shot which was a reflective shot within the mirror.  This created diversity in our piece when using different shots and angles to entice the audience.

Experimenting with Camera Angles

I have used 'The Grammer' of Television and Film to base camera shots and angles to enhance my knowledge. I took these photos using a One Plus One phone which provides clear images. I released the importance of getting the image in focus and getting everything in frame and to get the camera in focus on the image or object showing effective lighting and to create a clear image.

Mid-Shot=This shots provides the model to be equal area within the frame. When the actor is standing the shot has to be just above the waist.

Canted= These shots are on its axis so that normally vertical lines appear slanted to the left or right. These shots are used in mystery and suspense films to create a sense of unease to the viewer.

Worm's EyeIt can be used to look up to something to make an object look tall, strong, and mighty while the viewer feels child-like or powerless.

High= These shots are often used in battle sequences or when showing a large space that has a lot of visual information.

Low= A low shot would be used to portray power in a character or object during film. It gives the impression of massiveness

Extra-Close Up= An extra-close up during film may be used on characters to show their facial expressions in a scene.

Close Up= Can be used to introduce characters in film and possibly draw the audience's attention to certain aspects of a scene and provide a reaction shot.

Extra Long Shot= This shot is generally used as a scene-setting, establishing shot. It normally shows an exterior building, this can be used to introduce the setting e.g a city.

Long-shot= This shot which shows all or most of a fairly large subject and usually much of the surroundingslong shot is used to stress the environment or setting of a scene.

Birds Eye= This shot is an unnatural shot which is used for dramatic effect, it can be used to show a different perspective which the character cant see.

  1. You have studied The Grammar of Television and Film, and presented clear evidence that you understand shot types.
